The Icons Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts is certainly one of the richest iconographic collections in Croatia. Besides Cretan-Venetian icons, the collection also contains those of the Ionic school, as well as icons produced at the workshops of Boka Kotorska, Russian icons, and those from the workshops of the Greek mainland. The collection has been created for years through acquisitions, and an important segment formerly belonged to the private collection of dr. Ivo Tartaglia. Most icons are of small or middle format, which indicates that they were originally used for private devotion. This exceptional and varied collection includes icons that can be attributed to individual artists or workshops, as well as works of Madonnari, whose artistic expression comes close to that of the popular artists.
