Collection

The Museum of Fine Arts in Split was opened in 1931. Museum’s valuable collection today holds over 5,200 works and spans a time period from the 14th century to the most recent art production. The collection reflects the specific tastes and cultural standards of states and societies that succeeded one after the other in this region: from the Venetian Republic, Austro-Hungarian Empire, kingdom and socialist Yugoslavia to the Republic of Croatia. The display of some 400 artworks on the 2,200 m2 of exhibition space presents style, theme and media diversity of the collection in all its richness, thus providing the possibility of a unique time travel and unrepeatable experience of the evolution of artistic creativity.

The exhibition starts on the first floor with the display conceived by the museum advisor Božo Majstorović, presenting the works that span a long historical period from the 14th century to the ‘60s and showing rich style shifts from medieval painting to the abstract art of modern era.

The display presented on the ground floor, conceived by the senior curator Jasminka Babić and curator Marija Stipišić Vuković, represents the development of Croatian and local contemporary art practices, from the ‘60s until today, reflecting its multidisciplinary and multimedia variety.
